A new Access Action Plan for Weston Recreation Ground

Withywood Park now has its very own Access Action Plan, created hand in hand with local Disabled people, carers and community partners.

The plan was shaped by a group of 14 local Disabled people and carers with a wide range of lived experience, from mobility and sensory impairments to neurodiversity. Together they identified the changes that would make the biggest difference.

This project has been made possible by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Co-designed with the community

This plan is more than just a list of improvements. It’s a commitment to making sure everyone, can enjoy all that Weston Rec has to offer and has reasons to keep coming back – from the views of the surrounding countryside, to the sports pitches and the wildlife tucked away in its green corners.

Their priorities

The Plan has a range of priorities to improve accessibility as well as how Disabled people and unpaid carers can use the park for community, to enjoy nature and for health.

Some of the top priorities include:

  • Build accessible paths linking entrances, seating and key areas.
  • Improve entrances, gates and wayfinding to make the park easier to access and navigate.

  • Add more accessible, shaded seating and picnic areas.

  • Provide clear, accessible online information about the park and its facilities.

  • Create more inclusive spaces through sensory planting, accessible play and community activities.

Why this matters

Weston rec workshop2

We know parks are vital for health, wellbeing and connection – but not everyone can access them equally. By starting with the priorities that matter most, this plan will ensure Weston Rec becomes a space that feels truly open to all.

And the work doesn’t stop here. The lessons learned from Weston Rec will also shape a toolkit that other communities can use to make their own green spaces more inclusive.

What happens next?

Some changes can happen quickly, while others will take more time and investment. But thanks to the determination of local residents and community partners, the path to a more inclusive Weston Rec is now set.

We’ll be sharing updates as progress is made, and there will be plenty of opportunities to get involved – whether through volunteering, sharing ideas or supporting the changes as they happen.

Together, we’re making Weston Rec a place where everyone feels welcome.
